Japan throws away more than six million tons of food waste each year. To lessen the waste, the Japanese government has enacted a new law to reduce food waste by 50 percent by 2030 from levels in 2000.
Several companies in Japan are using artificial intelligence to help with this effort. For example, convenience store operator Lawson is using a technology called DataRobot, which uses technology to find ways to make supply meet demand. And beverage company Suntory Beverage & Food is experimenting with a technology from Fujitsu to learn if products such as bottles of tea and water have been damaged in shipping.
Other companies have also collaborated with food companies to develop new technologies to cut food waste. NEC Corporation is using artificial intelligence that estimates demand based on the weather, the time of year and buying behavior.
