There is legislation regarding the management of food waste in at least eight states. The amount of food waste that has ended up in landfills has tripled.

Companies such as Northeastern grocery store chain Hannaford Supermarkets have looked to anaerobic digestion as a solution.

Maryland and New Jersey recently have adopted laws to manage food waste. Opponents have argued that instead of new laws, market forces should be allowed to work out the issue.
