In order to reduce the 2.5 million tons of waste produced in CT on an annual basis, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has started the Organics Infrastructure Initiative.
The goal is to convert food waste into fuel and fertilizer. The state currently has one anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities currently in operation. About 35% of CT's trash is organic material.
The city of Bristol recently launched a composting inititative to educate residents through seminars and the construction of school gardens.
