The Ontario, N.Y., County Board of Supervisors just approved a pilot program that would allow Casella Waste Services to de-package recyclable materials at the Ontario County Landfill.

According to the Finger Lakes Times, Casella, which operates the county’s landfill, has lined up machinery to remove food waste and other organic material from packaging. The organic material would be accumulated and sent to an area anaerobic digester to help create compost fertilizer. Then, the remaining packaging material would be recycled, according to the report.

After considerable debate and procedural wrangling, the Ontario County Board of Supervisors voted Thursday to approve a pilot program application for the de-packaging of recyclable materials at the Ontario County Landfill.

Approval of the 12-month pilot program application to the state DEC was sought by Casella Waste Services, operator of the landfill.

The company has lined up a machine that would remove all food waste or other organic material from cans, bottles, bags, wrappers, plastics or cartons send to the landfill’s Material Recovery Facility for recycling.
