Shipments of nuclear waste from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant exceeded the Department of Energy's goal of 30 shipments for the 2022 fiscal year.

New Mexican Nuclear Waste Disposal Exceeds DOE Goals

After pressure from the state of New Mexico to increase in-state waste management, Nuclear waste shipments from northern New Mexico’s Los Alamos National Laboratory in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad went beyond the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) goals for the past year. The site collects clothing materials, equipment and other refuse contaminated by radiation. 

The DOE reported 52 shipments this fiscal year, which is 22 more than the goal of 30. In total, this included about 130 cubic meters of waste.
