Two years after Illinois had passed a landmark clean energy law, Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a bill that took away the ability for local governments to limit or ban wind and solar power.

Due to the new bill, Officials that had restricted the development of renewable projects in rural areas between Chicago and Champaign-Urbana are upset and claiming this move to be a power grab by majority Democrats.

Cindy Ihrke, Vice Chairman of the Ford County Board, a county that restricted renewable projects, said in an email, “my concern is for the health, safety and general welfare of our citizens, something the state has seemingly lost sight of.”

Clean energy advocates and supporters of the new law have said they hope this is trend-setting for the Midwest and hope Indiana and Michigan follow suit.
