A treatment system installed in 2013 by the state Department of Environmental Protection has "greatly reduced" emissions of a noxious gas from the Fenimore Landfill in Roxbury, according to a report released Tuesday by a federal public health agency.

However, the 40-page report cautions, the findings indicate that "some sensitive people" could "continue to suffer harmful health effects" from the hydrogen sulfide based on its odors and their previous exposure to it. "(Data) quality issues" also add "uncertainty" to the evaluation, according to the report.

At the request of the township and Bill Morrocco, representing the citizens group Roxbury Environmental Action Coalition, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry agreed in April 2014 to perform a public health assessment of the landfill.
