Newton County Facing Steep Costs with Landfill

The clock is ticking on making costly but federally and state-mandated improvements to the county landfill now that Newton County has received a permit to expand it, and the Newton County Board of Commissioners must find a suitable revenue stream to comply with environmental regulations as it prepares to expand.

During a special called work session Thursday night, Wayne Tamplin, who is also the county’s auditor, provided a break-down of the costs currently associated with the county’s landfill on Lower River Road and what costs the county can reasonably expect to pay moving forward.

Newton County’s landfill is currently divided into three sections, but the county recently received a permit from the state Environmental Protection Division to allow it to expand the landfill to one 216-acre site.
