Dunmore Borough Council on Monday debated whether to send to the state Department of Environmental Protection a formal letter opposing the expansion of Keystone Sanitary Landfill.
Noting that most council members have gone on record in The Times-Tribune several times stating opposition to the landfill’s plan for a massive, decades-long expansion, Councilman Timothy Burke said he asked a DEP spokesperson earlier Monday at a landfill forum in Throop if such opposition reported in the newspaper would be considered in DEP’s harms-and-benefits analysis.
Mr. Burke said he was told no — that a formal letter of opposition would be required for DEP to consider it. He made a motion to send such a letter, but the motion died for a lack of a second after several other council members said they felt “blindsided” and bristled at voting on a letter sight-unseen.
