The Hernando County, Fla., Commission voted unanimously to approve a seven-year contract extension with Republic Services. With the new contract, Republic will use automated trucks to lift and mechanically dump garbage carts, which will be provided to residents by Republic.
The price for non-mandatory pickup areas, which currently ranges from $9.21 to $10.47, will increase to $13.49. And the price for mandatory pickup areas will increase $61.08 per year.

A unanimous County Commission on Tuesday approved a seven-year extension to the garbage-collection contract with Republic Services, an agreement that will bring higher prices, county-provided garbage cans and automated trucks to lift and mechanically dump cans.
Commissioners said they liked the idea of the automated system and the uniformity of trash cans to clean up neighborhoods and make it clearer to the trash collection crews which homes had the garbage service.
The county's current contract with Republic expires in December 2018. The new service will start when the current pact ends but officials have not yet worked out details of the timing.
