Henderson County's contract to dispose of roughly 75,000 tons of solid waste per year expires June 30, and county officials are hoping a new bidding process will lower their costs.
The county's Stoney Mountain Landfill was closed in the mid-1990s. Since then, county trash has been hauled by a private contractor to landfills in South Carolina, most recently to Upstate Landfill in Union County.
"It was a term contract, and basically we had the opportunity to renew," said County Manager Steve Wyatt. "We talked to the company (Republic Services) and decided we'd put it out on the open market to see what's the best deal we could get for the people of Henderson County."
