The city is mulling over the idea of starting a compost collection program in Winnipeg.

Councilor Janice Lukes (St. Norbert) said Monday the plan could divert as much as 40 per cent of waste from the landfill, and the city hopes to pilot the idea as early as this fall.

“Basically a request for proposals has been issued to the public or whoever to come up with an organics diversion strategy,” explained Lukes. “Other cities across the country have some sort of composting system… so we’re looking at what we could make work here, what it would cost and what would be involved.”
