Landfill Foes Line Street in Protest

Willis and Margie Stricklin were among dozens of people who lined the streets in front of Galena City Hall for three hours Monday to protest a formerly proposed landfill in Cherokee County.

"We want to get our opinion out there and let the public servants be public servants," said Willis Stricklin, who was wearing two signs proclaiming: "I'm upset" and "Public service not self service."

The couple live on Lostine Road, two miles from the site the Galena City Council last summer proposed for a landfill at Riverton. In July, Galena council members approved the acquisition of a 160-acre tract and related ordinances to begin taking steps to turn 40 of those acres into a landfill.
