In an effort to reduce trash overflows, litter and the frequency of trash collection in the French Quarter, New Orleans city officials announced a plan to install solar-powered trash compactors in the Vieux Carré and other “high-profile locations” in the city.

“We are constantly exploring new, more efficient ways to improve city services and keep our streets and neighborhoods clean,” said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu in a statement. “These solar-powered compactors will ensure cleaner streets in high-traffic areas throughout the city, particularly in the French Quarter and Downtown Development District. It’s just the latest example of how we’re looking at new, innovative ways to improve services for our residents."

Last year, the city worked on a contract with Waste Management of Louisiana, LLC, to install 246 “BigBelly” solar trash compactors. It follows the pilot of two compactors in the French Quarter in 2011 and 110 units in 2013 by the RTA, the city said.
