During the pandemic, a lot changed. In San Antonio, this change was reflected in their waste collection.

As people's lifestyles changed during the pandemic, so did their garbage production habits. Josephine Valencia, deputy director of Solid Waste Management in San Antonio, said they witnessed a trash collection increase of 13 percent since the beginning of the pandemic. This is despite the fact the city only seeing a 3 percent population increase. Valencia also notes that about 40 percent of the trash currently sent to landfills could be composted.
