On February 19, Lake Station, Ind. Mayor Bill Carroll showed up to work a trash collection route.

Local sanitation workers were surprised when the official joined their shift. The mayor had been concerned about the department being short staffed as temperatures began to drop. A resident recognized Carroll, took a photo and posted it on social media. 

This is Carroll's first term in office, and he hopes to become a volunteer firefighter.
