Hawaii Needs to Fix Solid Waste Problems

An Hawaii county official suggested imposing new fees for residential disposal. He said the county needs to lower the cost of transporting waste around the island.

While commercial tipping fees were $114 per ton, transporting waste to landfill costs $242 per ton.

The official has recommended a “pay as you throw” system based on how much residents throw away.
