Officials Consider Building Waste Transfer Station — After Missouri City's Landfill Closes

With a little more than three years of life left at the Washington Landfill, city officials are actively looking at alternative ways to dispose of trash.

The most likely among those possibilities is development of a solid waste transfer station, according to City Administrator Jim Briggs.

The current landfill permit on the Struckhoff farm property off of Bluff Road will expire in about 3 1/2 years, Briggs said. The city has an option to negotiate for another phase at the landfill which could extend the life another five to six years, he explained.

However, with the cost of expanding the facility and more stringent state standards, it makes sense to look for an alternative method, Briggs said.
