Republic Services’ Forest Lawn Landfill in Three Oaks, Mich., will stop collecting trash on January 31. Shortly after the waste drop-offs end, construction will begin on capping the last of the site’s active cells, which is expected to take about a year.
Once the site is completely closed, it will be monitored by contractors and possibly sold for other uses.
