EPA Says Kalamazoo Proposal for Allied Landfill Appears to Meet Criteria to Protect Environment

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the city of Kalamazoo's recent proposal to cap contamination and redevelop the Allied Paper Superfund site meets the agency's criteria for protecting the environment and that it will seek public input this summer.

"Although EPA has not yet made a formal decision on a cleanup plan for the Allied Landfill, EPA believes the proposed alternatives the City helped develop meet the agency's criteria for environmental protectiveness," spokesman Phillippa Cannon told Kalamazoo Gazette on Thursday of the agency's position. "Redevelopment of the property would provide valuable long-term stewardship of the landfill.
