Draft EA Posted for Closure of South Hilo Sanitary Landfill in Hawaii

Two resolutions will enable the hauling of the solid waste to West Hawaii once the Hilo landfill is closed.

A draft environmental assessment has been published for the Hilo landfill closure project, which will cost $19 million and must conform to various county, state and federal rules.

Meanwhile, the Hawaii County Council on October 18 voted to approve two resolutions that will enable the hauling of the solid waste to West Hawaii once the Hilo landfill is closed.

BigIslandVideoNews.com has the details:

Resolution 310-17 authorizes the mayor “to enter into a five-year lease agreement for five refuse trailers for the Department of Environmental Management, Solid Waste Division, at an approximate cost of $12,000 per month, needed to accommodate the additional hauling capacity required to transport waste to the West Hawai‘i Sanitary Landfill upon the closure of the South Hilo Sanitary Landfill. The County will own the equipment at the end of the lease.”

In addition, Resolution 311-17 authorizes the mayor “to enter into a five-year lease agreement for five semi-tractors for the Department of Environmental Management, Solid Waste Division, at an approximate cost of $16,000 per month, needed to accommodate the additional hauling capacity required to transport waste to the West Hawai‘i Sanitary Landfill upon the closure of the South Hilo Sanitary Landfill. The County will own the equipment at the end of the lease.”

When the two resolutions passed through Council Finance Committee on October 3, councilmembers had lots of questions. For example, chair Valerie Poindexter wanted to know how the Hamakua Coast (her district) will be impacted by the change.
