Buena Vista Landfill Readies for Its Final Act

Add the Buena Vista Landfill to the list of facilities nearing the end of its useful life. The final cell is now being used and its estimated the landfill's final closure will come in 2035.

According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel:

At the end of the month, crews will wrap up excavating a giant pit that’s 7 acres wide with 250,000 square feet of floor space that will allow the dump to accept garbage for another 15 to 20 years.

That means the landfill likely will be covered and closed by 2035.

“This is the last permitted area in our landfill,” said Kasey Kolassa, recycling and solid waste services manager for the county. “Depending on garbage rates, if we can recycle more, it will be closer to 20 years.”

But the area is served by another, larger landfill that has about 100 years of capacity left.
