After five years of being abandoned, the Central Waste Landfill located in Smith Township, Ohio, will close by November 2018. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Mahoning County Health Department are leading and overseeing the closure process.

The closure process will begin this fall or winter, and once the landfill is officially closed, it will be routinely checked twice a year instead of twice a month.

The Alliance Review has more information:

Plans to officially close the Central Waste Landfill have been announced by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

Located in Smith Township, just north of the intersection of Courtney Road and Oyster Road, the municipal solid waste landfill last accepted waste in 2012.

Information sheets have been distributed to area residents outlining what to expect as far as construction activity, possible noise and dust along with who will be overseeing the project.
