Casella Waste Systems was founded in 1975 as a single-truck operation. Until the late 1990s, the firm's operations were concentrated in the Northeast. During that period, Casella, through its acquisition of KTI, expanded into much of the eastern United States.

Casella aggressively promotes the concept of sustainability and say it attempts to differentiate itself "by linking recycling and other leading-edge resource management approaches to the solid waste disposal needs of municipalities." The firm operates five landfill gas-to-energy projects that collectively produce about 25 megawatts per hour of electricity. The firm's New England Organics produces compost from organic waste, and GreenFiber, a joint venture between Casella and Louisiana-Pacific Corp., uses recycled paper to manufacture fiber insulation.
