Delaware Landfill Agency Sees Improving Outlook

After years of rising rates, layoffs and declining revenues, the public authority that manages Delaware’s municipal waste landfills is reporting a business upturn. Residents and waste haulers, however, are unlikely to see any immediate relief from Delaware Solid Waste Authority disposal rates that already average among the highest of any state.

Those rates will edge still higher July 1, when the third consecutive year of $1.50 per ton rate increases takes effect, pushing the new level to $88.50 per ton.

DSWA officials said the increases were needed to help cover expenses and manage debt loads as business at Delaware’s three main landfills plunged with the recession and the start of a major state recycling initiative.
