The town took the first steps Monday toward two measures that will see it licensing waste haulers once more, and joining an alliance with possibly 13 other towns in order to streamline waste management.
Aspects of Act 148, Vermont's Universal Recycling Law, began taking effect last year, with more stringent requirements being phased in from year to year. Part of that law requires all towns not in a solid waste district or solid waste alliance to adopt an ordinance requiring waste haulers to be licensed in the town's they operate, and to report the amount, type, and source of waste being hauled to the state. This is in an effort to increase the amount of material being recycled.
