Massachusetts Providing $1M for Mattress Recycling

It’s big, it’s heavy and it’s tough to move down the stairs. So just imagine how much space your old mattress will take up in a landfill.

In an effort to boost mattress recycling, the state’s Department of Environmental Protection is setting aside as much as $1 million this year to help cities and towns pay the cost of transporting and recycling old household mattresses.

Framingham, Natick, Southborough, Medfield and Medway are among close to 50 municipalities that were selected to participate in the program, which is funded through the state's Sustainable Materials Recovery Program.

Created under the Green Communities Act, SMRP aims to increase diversion, reuse, composting and recycling of materials in the solid waste stream. The program will provide an estimated $3.57 million worth of grants this year to 80 communities, regional groups and nonprofits, according to an announcement from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
