A federal judge has awarded more than $50 million to a group of Elkhart residents in a class-action lawsuit against VIM Recycling, an industrial waste processor.

"This judgment puts into perspective the enormous cost imposed on real people, their lives and community, when a company fails to be a responsible corporate citizen and when government turns a blind eye and does not adequately enforce environmental safeguards," Kim Ferraro, an attorney for the Hoosier Environmental Council, said in a press release. 

U.S. District Court Judge Philip Simon awarded $50.6 million in damages to be divided among 1,025 people who suffered from VIM's operations, the Hoosier Environmental Council reported in its press release.
