THE WOODLANDS, Texas --Encina Development Group (“Encina”), a company that produces circular chemicals from waste plastics, announced the appointment of Carlos Cabrera to its board of directors.

“We are honored to welcome Carlos Cabrera to the Encina board,” said David Schwedel, Executive Director of Encina. “Carlos’s global industry expertise and strong leadership will be invaluable to Encina as we grow our business to deliver highly-valued circular chemicals to the marketplace.”

“Circular economy inspires a different way of thinking about waste and production,” said Mr. Cabrera. “Encina’s unique plastics-to-circular-chemical technology helps customers advance their sustainability goals and practices.”

Mr. Cabrera currently serves as the executive chairman of the board of directors of Genomatica, a leader in bioengineering and commercial biobased processes. He is a member of the board of directors of the Gas Technology Institute, and a distinguished associate at FGE, a global energy consultancy.

He was formerly chairman, president, and CEO of UOP LLC, a Honeywell Company, that supplies and licenses process technology and services to the petrochemical, refining, and gas processing industries. He received the Honeywell 2008 Senior Leadership Award, the company’s highest honor awarded to its leaders. He previously served as the executive chairman of Ivanhoe Energy; a director at Gevo; and the CEO of China’s National Institute of Low Carbon and Clean Energy.

In February 2021, Mr. Cabrera was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering for leadership in developing and commercializing widely adopted processes for fuels and intermediate chemicals. The induction is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer, honoring his achievements and contributions to the field.

Mr. Cabrera has also garnered many awards and honors, including the Fuels and Petrochemicals Division Leadership Award by The American Institute of Chemical Engineers; a Hispanic Business Magazine’s Corporate Elite; and an Honorary ISA Lifetime Membership from the Instrument Society of America.
