Every golf course has its pitfalls: sand traps, water hazards — Kenny Loggins-backed gophers. But Lambert’s Point Golf Course in Norfolk, Va., inadvertently introduced a hazard of a different sort when wind and rain from Hurricane Irene eroded a shoreline slope on Hole No. 7, unearthing a vein of 50-year-old trash. Lambert’s Point opened in 2005, built atop a landfill that was closed in 1980.

Lambert’s Point officials say they plan to repair the breach and return the award-winning golf course to its pristine state. In the meantime, in lieu of replacing divots, golfers are asked to apply daily cover.
