Among the less obvious options for recycling e-waste: a clothing-based socio-political statement. But that's what students Jennifer Shannon and Andi Cheung in the ITP program at New York University’s Tisch School for the Arts did, crafting a bikini from obsolete tech detritus and featuring it in a fashion magazine-inspired photo spread. The glossy, titillating spread is punctuated by quotes highlighting the perceived crisis of women pursuing careers in fashion and other craft trades over careers in science, math and technology.
It’s a striking statement on gender and aptitude, not to mention an impressive use of e-waste, somewhat undercut by the fact that it could just as easily represent a challenge on “Project Runway.”
