Lansing, Mich. – the state Department of Environmental Quality reported a 4.7 percent decrease in the amount of trash that went to Michigan landfills in 2002. The lower figure — 57.5 million cubic yards from October 2001 through September 2002 — also included out-of-state trash. But that dipping number is almost certain to rise again now that Michigan receives all of Toronto’s refuse. A bill currently is sitting in the Senate that would ban Canadian waste from U.S. landfills.
