The landfill gas-to-energy (LFGTE) project at Republic Services' Newton County (Ind.) Landfill was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with an LFGTE Project of the Year Award for 2010.

The award was announced at EPA’s 14th Annual Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) Conference and Project Expo in Baltimore.

Urban Forest Recyclers, which has a manufacturing plant near the Newton County Landfill, uses the landfill gas from the project to dry the egg cartons that it makes from recycled materials.

“This project is an example of true sustainability,” said Terry Zona, general manager for Republic Services.
