Organics Program Approved in Temecula, Calif.

The Temecula City Council on Tuesday night approved a new recycling program that will jack up trash rates by $1 a month per parcel starting in January and $1.95 per month per parcel in fiscal year 2016-17.

The program, which will divert grass clippings, green waste and food waste from landfills, is a response to state mandates that aim to reduce the amount of methane released into the atmosphere.

According to the EPA, landfills are the third largest source of methane emissions in the United States.
