Portland Sends 1M Tons of Trash to Landfills a Year. Can it Do Better?

The Portland area chucks some 1 million tons of garbage per year.

By next week, Metro, the regional government responsible for managing the waste, will put out an all-call for partners to manage that impressive stream after 2019, when its existing contract with Waste Management expires.

The move is setting off a regional conversation around just what happens to all that garbage, currently dispatched to landfills in the Columbia River Gorge.
