Spoiler Alert, a technology and professional services company that helps food businesses manage unsold inventory, and HelloFresh, a world-leading meal kit company, have announced the results of their ongoing partnership.

The duo began their partnership in 2017 with a goal of deploying a standardized and scalable solution for recovering value from HelloFresh’s surplus food inventory. The program, which is now live across the U.S., has enabled HelloFresh to reduce landfill-bound waste from each of its distribution centers and increase food access for food-insecure families in its communities.

By working with Spoiler Alert, HelloFresh has decreased landfill-bound organic waste by 65 percent, reduced waste hauling pickups by 44 percent, nearly doubled the percentage of unsold inventory donated to charities and donated more than one million meals comprised of fresh ingredients to its local communities, based on the United States Department of Agriculture’s calculation of 1.2 pounds per meal.

“From the time we started our company, reducing food waste has been inherent in our mission and model,” said Uwe Voss, chief operations officer and managing director for HelloFresh US, in a statement. “Working with Spoiler Alert has enabled us to double down on our mission to operate a sustainable business that generates great value for our customers and our community.”

Spoiler Alert is working with HelloFresh’s operations and supply chain teams to provide greater visibility into the company’s surplus inventory. The partnership focuses on optimizing diversion of healthy surplus food away from landfills to alternative outlets, such as hunger relief organizations. This has helped to improve HelloFresh’s operations and make a meaningful difference in local communities. The company is now leveraging this data to better inform purchasing decisions and drive additional waste reductions.

“At Spoiler Alert, we recognize the massive problem that food waste poses to businesses and our planet. We’re using our unique platform and data analysis to change the status quo. With HelloFresh, the food recovery numbers speak for themselves,” said Emily Malina, co-founder and chief product officer of Spoiler Alert, in a statement. “HelloFresh has been a leader in their space in many areas, but this is one where they have really stepped up and are at the forefront of the industry. We have all been incredibly impressed with their team.”
