Kuusakoski Recycling and Peoria Disposal Co. (PDC) have partnered on the recycling of electronic waste, specifically cathode ray tubes (CRT).

The partnership between the two Illinois companies – Kuusakoski based in Plainfield and PDC in Peoria – will process CRT glass, increase CRT North American processing capacity and establish a new beneficial use for the treated glass as landfill alternate daily cover (ADC), the companies said in a news release.

The partners expects to bring additional CRT lead glass processing capacity of 50,000 tons to North America, as well as a second U.S. facility. Also, PDC’s existing permit holds the option to triple this capacity in the future. The companies point to a shortage of CRT glass processing capacity in North America currently.

PDC’s KleanKover Recycling Solution treats crushed CRT glass by stabilizing the lead contained inside to virtually prevent leaching, at a cost to Kuusakoski Recycling customers of up to 40 percent below current processing methods, the companies said.

 PDC's Indian Creek landfill has been permitted to use the KleanKover as ADC to meet state daily cover regulations for municipal waste landfill operations.
