Proposed Hazardous Waste Facility in California May Violate Zoning Rules

A watchdog coalition wants Irwindale officials to explain the approval of a hazardous waste recycling facility adjacent to the Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area, which the group claims is in “clear” violation of the city’s zoning code and general plan.

Several environmental advocacy groups last week sent a letter to city officials detailing the violations and urging the council to overturn the approval at a City Council meeting Wednesday.

The group, which protested outside City Hall two weeks ago, is concerned about the site’s proximity to an 836-acre ecological reserve, a place where people swim, hike and fish.
