Last weekend, a biodigester at Lowell Energy AD in Lowell, Mich., exploded due to a buildup of methane gas. The explosion resulted in a ruptured tank cover, a lingering odor and spilled waste that threatened a nearby storm sewer drain.
Lowell Energy was shutting down its operations in compliance with recent orders from the Lowell City Council when the tank exploded. And now, the company is faced with an additional $1,200 in citations from local authorities and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

A Lowell biodigester nearly exploded this weekend due to a buildup of methane gas, rupturing a tank cover and causing a problem odor to return.
A mix of waste salad dressing, beer, expired milk and manure spilled from the broken tank onto the ground as well, threatening a storm sewer drain on the property at 625 Chatham St. in Lowell.
The result: another $1,200 in citations for Lowell Energy AD from local authorities, and queries from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
