When winter weather arrives, it’s important for waste and recycling collection workers and their customers to recognize the many risks and hazards that come with working outside. With proper training and planning, collection workers can stay safe on the job and customers can stay safe while placing their bins on the curb.

One of the industry’s leading associations, the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA), understands the dangers that collection workers and customers face during the winter season and stresses the importance of putting safety first.

"NWRA developed a Winter Safety infographic because we believe in taking a holistic approach toward safety and health in our industry and that extends to our workers and our customers," says Brandon Wright, director of communications at NWRA. "NWRA is completely committed to achieving a positive and robust safety culture industry-wide. We’re pleased to work with our members and our partners to move the needle on safety for our workers and the communities that our industry serves."

In this gallery, NWRA highlights 10 tips to help collection workers and customers stay safe during the colder months.
