The Hefty EnergyBag Bag Program has been in place in the Papillion, Neb., area for approximately 18 months. Currently, about 12,000 households across the metro area participate in the program, and that number is growing by the day.

With the program, households receive orange bags to fill with materials that do not fit under the standard recycling category, such as juice pouches, vegetable bags and cereal box liners. Those bags can be placed at the curb to be picked up on regular recycling collection days. Once picked up, the materials are sent to First Star’s materials recycling facility to be sorted and transported to waste-to-energy facilities.

Dale Gubbels, president of First Star Recycling in Omaha, said the program is in about 12,000 households across the metro area, roughly 4,000 of those in Papillion.
