Coca Cola Co. has outlined its recycling and waste reduction goals for the 2012 Olympics in London.
Coke said all products served at the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be in 100 percent recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging that will contain 25 percent recycled plastic. Where possible, Coke will use recycled materials for staff uniforms, licensed merchandise and merchandising equipment. All merchandising items used in the venues are being designed to allow them to be recycled or reused, the company said on its website.
The company has asked its suppliers to create processes to minimize waste and maximize recycled content. Coke has designed a sustainability policy for its suppliers to guide them in the company’s expectations.
With consumers at the Olympics, Coke will promote and encourage recycling. The company also is supporting the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) to create an easy-use bin system to ensure clean recycling streams.
Officials at the London games are aiming for 70 percent of all waste being recycling, reused or composted.
