Du Pont Industrial Biosciences and EcoStrate SFS Inc. have agreed to establish the first post-consumer recycling program for commercial and residential carpet made from Du Pont’s Sorona renewable fiber.
The two companies will work together to develop and commercialize products using recovered post-consumer carpet made with Sorona fiber. EcoStrate, which makes promotional items and mud flaps, will explore other applications for the recycling material, including ballistics testing, flooring, shipping crates, pallets and building materials, according to a news release.
Sonora is a biobased material. Du Pont said while it has practiced post-industrial recycling of the material, it is looking for post-consumer solutions as well.
“We believe that EcoStrate has an innovative program, and our collaboration will be a benefit to both the carpet and recycling industries,” said John Lyons, global business development manager for DuPont Sorona. “With end of carpet life options in place, consumers and specifiers of carpet made with Sorona will feel even better about their choice of carpets.”
EcoStrate has used material such as carpeting, textile waste and other waste to make its products.
