To ring in World Environment Day, the Coca-Cola company in Hong Kong is working with the City Plaza to launch a ‘Recycle Bar’ which will help demonstrate that recycled PET bottles can be given new life.
Polyethylene terephthalate, better known as PET, is a type of plastic that is 100% recyclable but maintains the strength and lightweight feel of regular plastic.
The Recycle Bar in Hong Kong consists of over 30 pieces of furniture that are made from 18,000 plastic bottles through 3D-printing. This furniture, such as bar counters, stools, tables, and chairs, were all locally produced and after the pop-up Recycle Bar closes, the furniture will be reused at a Recycling Academy experience center.
The bar will also showcase a collection of items made from rPET (recycled PET) with the hope to education the public about proper collection and recycling of used resources.
Patrons who recycle their used PET bottles at the bar will receive a free beverage and rPET-made souvenirs.
The Recycle Bar aims to be an education exhibition for recycling, unveiling the procedures of PET recycling. Visitors can learn about proper recycling of beverage packaging and experience one of the recycling procedures by shredding PET bottles at the bar.
