Norfolk Expands Recycling Program

Rebekah A. Hall

Norfolk, Va. – Embracing blue, 95-gallon wheeled carts, the Southeastern, Public Service Authority (SPSA) has expanded the city’s recycling program in hopes of 57,000 households eventually recycling more. Previously, the city used smaller, uncovered bins, and recently only 5 percent of some neighborhoods had been participating in recycling efforts. This initiative is similar to one in Virginia Beach, where SPSA was able to successfully increase recycling rates by 75 percent.
