In 2010, an estimated 133 billion lbs. of food from U.S. retail food stores, restaurants and homes went uneaten. Wholesome food that could have fed families in need is too often sent to landfills. The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have challenged producer groups, processors, manufacturers, retailers, communities and governmental agencies to join their efforts to: Reduce food loss and waste, Recover wholesome food for human consumption and Recycle
