Operators of a New York landfill are seeking a 10-year renewal of its solid waste facility permit, which, if approved, would end in 2027. It is estimated that the landfill has the capacity to accept waste until 2024, based on current maximum permitted volumes.

The landfill’s current permit was issued by the state Department of Environmental Conservation on Aug. 7, 2007. It modified a previous Part 360 permit to approve construction and operation of a landfill expansion to provide 14 years of additional disposal capacity. The permit was renewed on Nov. 28, 2008, with an expiration date of Oct. 10, 2017.
In a letter to Region 8 permit administrator Scott Sheeley, Seneca Meadows Environmental, Engineering and Compliance Manager Thomas Hasek said the DEC’s renewal of a permit is a Type II action and not subject to State Environmental Quality Review Act review because there would be no material changes in permit conditions or the scope of the permitted activities.
“The permit renewal is a procedural effort that is required by the DEC due to its 10-year limit on Part 360 permits,’’ said Kyle Black, landfill general manager. “It will allow the continuance of our existing, approved operational permit.”
