Harrisburg, Pa. – Houston-based Waste Management Inc. has agreed to pay a $3.7 million civil penalty to settle violations at its Alliance Landfill in Lackawanna County, Pa. The landfill’s former owners apparently accepted 36,296 tons more of municipal solid waste than the landfill was allowed during 1995 and 1996.
Waste Management has fully cooperated with both federal and state investigators, the DEP says.
The $3.7 million will go to Pennsylvania’s Solid Waste Abatement Fund and the Clean Water Fund, according to the DEP.
Four former landfill officials were indicted for concealing the excess dumping and underpaying the required fees.
