Recycled Rubber Puts Ohio Plant Back in Business

Phoenix – Landstar Inc., Scottsdale, Ariz., has signed an agreement with the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) to lease the property and purchase the buildings and equipment of SWACO's waste-to-energy facility in Columbus, Ohio. The plant has been vacant since it closed in 1994 because of financial and environmental reasons. Landstar plans to use devulcanization technology to initiate a rubber-recycling business at the facility. The company will not use the waste-to-energy equipment and will try to dismantle the smokestacks.
