Pennsylvania Waste Industries Seek Friendlier Ties with DEP

Harrisburg, Pa. – The Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association (PWIA) has announced its disappointment with a commonwealth court decision that upholds a harms/benefits test for landfill permit applications. The test requires landfill-permit applicants to demonstrate that the social and economic benefits of granting the permit outweigh environmental harm. PWIA represents private-sector waste haulers and landfill operators in Pennsylvania. PWIA President Thomas E. McMonigle said the commonwealth’s Department of Environmental of Protection has had an adversarial relationship with the waste industry and would like to see that change.
